What is Mayday?

It’s the RNLI’s yellow-themed annual fundraising campaign that takes place across the whole of the UK and Ireland. This year we’re hoping to raise £750,000 through Mayday – this will be used to fund essential kit for our crew members.

Richard Lee, Regional Marketing Manager, talks about the importance of funding our crew kit:

‘RNLI volunteer lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland are willing to drop everything to go and save lives at sea when they get the call. Their specialist kit protects them against extreme conditions, gives them a firm footing on unsteady surfaces, and shields them from injury, allowing them to carry out their lifesaving work. The Mayday campaign is our own call for help, as we rely on the generosity of the public to fund this vital kit that helps keep the crews safe when they risk their lives for others.’

Your great support last year

Last year, with your fantastic support, we raised over £600,000. Thank you for taking part in welly walks, rowing competitions, fairs, street collections and so many other fantastic fundraising activities.

What’s happening this year?

This year we’ve got some more ideas about how you can get involved in Mayday:

  • Get your yellow on – our crews get their yellow on every day to save lives, and you can too! You could organise a yellow-themed dress-down day and ask for donations for funding our crew kit. The more yellow you can wear, the better!
  • Bake sale – fancy whipping up some tasty lemon tarts and hosting a bake sale to fund some yellow wellies for our crew members?
  • Mayday events – some Mayday events have already been set up, why not take a look here to see if there are any in your area that you can join in with?

If you’d like to get involved, please visit to register for a free Mayday fundraising pack with even more ideas. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll be helping to give our lifesavers everything they need to save lives at sea and we’re hoping that with your support we can make this year’s campaign the best Mayday yet!
