Aldeburgh RNLI Lifeboat Launched to Activated Personal Locator Beacon

Lifeboats News Release

Aldeburgh's all-weather lifeboat (ALB), Freddie Cooper, was launched on Sunday (16 September) to search for a potential person in the water, due to an activated personal locator beacon (PLB), North of Aldeburgh.

At 9.02am, there was a UK Coastguard request to launch the ALB to search an area between Aldeburgh and Southwold, where the beacon may be located. Once in the area, Aldeburgh Lifeboat crew used a method called a directional finder, to try and pin point the location more accurately.

A fishing boat heading for Sizewell beach was a potential target, but Shingle Street Coastguard, who had been tasked to meet the boat, found the crew did not have this particular PLB on board.

Aldeburgh ALB held off Sizewell and was tasked by UK Coastguard to continue to use the directional finder. As the coordinates now appeared to be on land, Aldeburgh ALB was stood down at 10.05am and returned to station.

The ALB was back on station at 10.35am.
