Enjoy a fish supper with a lifesaving twist at the RNLI College

Fantastic fish dishes, a Michelin-starred chef and the opportunity to raise vital funds to help save lives at sea await those who want to sink their teeth into a special event at the RNLI College in Poole on Thursday 5 October.

The evening is being held in support of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution’s (RNLI) Fish Supper fundraiser and will see Alex Aitken, chef patron of the award-winning Christchurch restaurant The Jetty, recreate two of his favourite fish dishes for 150 guests.

Diners will have the pleasure of enjoying Alex’s Cannelloni of Smoked Salmon starter followed by his Cod and Crab main dish, as well as enjoying a talk from the man himself. A dessert of RNLI lime and lemon bavarois will be served, as well as coffee and dark chocolates. A vegetarian option of Cannelloni of Carrot followed by Mouli and Mushrooms will also be available.

These mouth-watering fish dishes have appeared on the menu of Alex’s Michelin-starred Le Poussin restaurant and are currently served at The Jetty in Mudeford.

The RNLI’s Fish Supper fundraiser, which runs over the weekend of 13–15 October, encourages people across the country to host a fish meal with friends and family to raise funds to support the charity’s lifesaving work.

Alex Aitken said: ‘I’m really looking forward to cooking two of my favourite fish dishes at the RNLI College.

‘The evening is for a really great cause and I’d encourage others to take part in the RNLI’s Fish Supper fundraiser. Whether you’re an expert cook or an absolute novice, give it a go and enjoy serving up a tasty fish dish while supporting such a vital charity.’

There will also be after-dinner talks from Poole-based experienced yachtsman Dr Tim Howard and the RNLI’s Glen Mallen.

Dr Howard has been rescued twice by RNLI lifeboat crews. The first time was in 1961 when he was caught in Force 7 winds off Falmouth and the second rescue was 20 years ago when he capsized a catamaran off Brownsea Island.

Glen Mallen is a Lifesaving Manager at the RNLI and was a volunteer crew member at Poole Lifeboat Station for 20 years, serving in the roles of coxswain and helm.

Dr Tim Howard, who took part in the Clipper Round the World race in 2005/6, said: ‘I know better than most people what an important service the RNLI’s volunteer lifeboat crews provide, having been rescued not once, but twice by them! I’m looking forward to telling everyone at this event about the two dramatic rescues that I was involved in and I hope we raise lots of money for this great cause.’

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. Our volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service in the United Kingdom and Ireland from 238 lifeboat stations, including four along the River Thames and inland lifeboat stations at Loch Ness, Lough Derg, Enniskillen and Lough Ree. Additionally the RNLI has more than 1,000 lifeguards on over 240 beaches around the UK and operates a specialist flood rescue team, which can respond anywhere across the UK and Ireland when inland flooding puts lives at risk.

The RNLI relies on public donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. As a charity it is separate from, but works alongside, government-controlled and funded coastguard services. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 our lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved at least 140,000 lives. Volunteers make up 95% of the charity, including 4,600 volunteer lifeboat crew members and 3,000 volunteer shore crew. Additionally, tens of thousands of other dedicated volunteers raise funds and awareness, give safety advice, and help in our museums, shops and offices.
