Firstly, Flag Week collections last week raised a wonderful £1048.53 – a huge THANK YOU to all who helped and donated!

Torbay Lifeboat Tours are now underway each morning until Friday 11 August, and annual favourites ‘Walk the Extra Mile’ and ‘Cover the Flag’ are also now live, starting a full week of Brixham-based fun and entertainment including boating models on display, a Childrens’ Treasure Hunt (see next paragraph), Coffee Mornings at the Sprat & Mackerel and Rockfish Brixham, a Quiz Night at the Ernie Lister bar (Quayside Hotel), and children’s face-painting with Stormy Stan in the town centre.

Children are invited to ‘find Harry Helmsman’ in our town centre Treasure Hunt! Forms are available from the RNLI shop in Middle Street or the kiosk opposite the lifeboat station ready for the search for Harry in 12 windows around Brixham town centre and harbour. Completed forms with the 12 locations shown can be returned to the shop or kiosk, and two lucky winners (one girl and one boy) will be drawn from the correct entries to win membership to Storm Force, the RNLI Club for young people - entries close at midnight on Sunday 13 August.

Finally, on Sunday 13 August, residents and visitors to Brixham will be treated to a full day of wonderful activities for this year’s RNLI Torbay Lifeboat Seaside Special: the day starts with competitors setting off for the Two Lighthouse Run (runners can register now online or between 8-8.45am on the day) followed by a full programme of activities including lifeboat tours, coastal safety advice, Pedalo Grand Prix, a delicious BBQ and Tea Room, duck races, boating models, Water Ball Challenge and numerous water-based displays including Water Board, Wakeboard, Flyboard, Jet Ski, Coastguard, Police Dive Team, Plymouth University Seagrass Robot and, of course, the popular Search and Rescue demonstration – amazing!

The annual Fishermens Mission Dedication service, led this year by new Superintendent Matt Skinner, takes place at 6.30pm (accompanied by the wonderful Brixham Town Band).

As dusk falls from 8.30pm onwards, supporters will be able to purchase candle lanterns from the crew as usual and settle on Brixham breakwater and beach ready to enjoy the evening finale, the Grand Fireworks Display at 9.15pm. Those wishing to further support the fundraising effort are invited to purchase tickets for an evening cruise around Torbay (departing at 7.30pm) timed to arrive at Brixham Breakwater for 9.15pm.*

*weather permitting. Cruise tickets available from RNLI shop and kiosk, Western Lady kiosk in Brixham or Paignton Pleasure Cruises ticket kiosk in Paignton

This year’s RNLI Torbay Seaside Special really is set to be the best ever – come and join us and support your wonderful RNLI Torbay lifeboat team. Full event details and timings can be found in the Lifeboat Day Seaside Special booklet, paper copies of which are available in numerous outlets in Brixham town centre or from the Brixham boathouse, kiosk or RNLI shop or access online via the link below.

Key facts about the RNLI

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea. Our volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service in the United Kingdom and Ireland from 238 lifeboat stations, including four along the River Thames and inland lifeboat stations at Loch Ness, Lough Derg, Enniskillen and Lough Ree. Additionally the RNLI has more than 1,000 lifeguards on over 240 beaches around the UK and operates a specialist flood rescue team, which can respond anywhere across the UK and Ireland when inland flooding puts lives at risk.

The RNLI relies on public donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. As a charity it is separate from, but works alongside, government-controlled and funded coastguard services. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 our lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved at least 140,000 lives. Volunteers make up 95% of the charity, including 4,600 volunteer lifeboat crew members and 3,000 volunteer shore crew. Additionally, tens of thousands of other dedicated volunteers raise funds and awareness, give safety advice, and help in our museums, shops and offices.
